Cadets (13 and 14 Yrs)

Our Under 13 and 14 members are known as Cadets and typically work towards achieving the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC). This can be done as a new member or transitioning from the Nipper program.

The SRC is a pivotal step for young members looking to become active lifesavers. Aimed at those aged 13 and above, the SRC course equips participants with the skills and knowledge required to perform basic rescues and provide first aid. The course includes:

  • Surf Awareness and Skills: Understanding the surf environment and developing proficiency in surf swimming and board paddling.

  • Rescue Techniques: Learning practical rescue techniques using rescue tubes and boards.

  • CPR: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training.

  • Radio Communication: Training in the use of lifesaving communication devices.

Completing the SRC not only empowers our youth with lifesaving skills but also opens up opportunities to volunteer as a patrolling member at Swanbourne Beach.

Once complete, our SRC members are rostered onto a patrols. We ensure the Youth have plenty of experience around them when on patrol and where possible are paired up with other Youth members. If a Cadet has already gained their SRC they will requalify it early in the season and attend Sunday morning activities.

Youth (15 to 18 Yrs)

Youth members are those aged 15 through to 18, gaining their Bronze Medallion once they have turned 15. This can either be as a new member, or the next step after SRC.

We welcome all youth who are eager to learn, grow and contribute to the safety and well-being of our beach community. If you're interested in joining our youth programs, earning your SRC or Bronze, and getting involved, please contact us or visit the Club during our training sessions. We look forward to seeing you at Swanbourne Beach!

Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of lifesavers, and leaders within surf lifesaving. Our Youth Programs, run entirely by volunteers, offer a blend of fun, fitness and essential life saving skills. Whether your looking to achieve your Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) or Bronze Medallion, take part in Sunday morning fitness and skill building activities, make some new friends, or become a patrolling lifesaver, we'd love to have you at the Club.

Swanny has two youth categories - Cadets (13 and 14 years old) and Youth (15 to 18 years old). Becoming a Cadet or Youth member is the beginning of the road as a surf lifesaver. You will learn basic surf awareness skills, as well as how to perform rescues and work in a patrol setting. Each patrol has experienced members and this is a great way to learn how to become a lifesaver, meet new people and keep our amazing beach safe!

All our Cadet and Youth members are invited to attend Sunday activities from 9am to further develop skills across all disciplines of surf lifesaving. There are also social activities held throughout the season, and the chance to get involved in exciting Youth camps.
