Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue Results Season 2020/21

Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue Firstly thank you to Logan Ovenden-Clarke and crew for their assistance in the setting of the string line.  Thanks to Logan and Peter Brigg for resetting the string line such that it was taut. Thank you also to Erin Gallagher and the Nippers for loan of the string line. Thanks also to Amy Prosser and Briggy for officiating! Thanks also to the Patrol for retrieving the string line, washing everything and putting it away. The easterly was in for the day, so flat conditions with not much assistance for the mixed board paddle. So it was going to come down to a drag race and which teams got their timing and positioning right. Heat 1 This looked like a hot heat until we saw Heat 2. Briggy and Leesa failed to impress the officials performance wise but earnt the wildcard for finishing a close 5th.

Heat 2

This was a hot heat as well as a training ground for future competitors. Lydia Defrancesco lowered the bar with an age at entry of 10 years 11 months, to swim for Luke Bishop. Nelly Chandler set a new benchmark for the youngest competitor at 8 and half, paddling for her father Christian. (Only 45 years younger than the oldest competitor!)

Final

Jules and Gunz thought they had a Swanbourne Cup at last only for Tilly and Clancy to slowly reel them back in from 2nd position at the end of the swim. Everyone other than Tilly and Clancy once again rued not being lighter faster swimmers/paddlers! Tilly and Clancy were also using Lucy's board. Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue 202021 So congratulations to Tilly Banfield and Clancy Banfield who are the winners of the Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue Race for 2021! Back to back from 2020! Hopefully Ray Lampard will have plenty of photos/video to upload later this evening. Also check out Libby Rayner's video which shows the finish line action.

Age analysis of Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue Race Winners.

Observations:

  1. 2020 was definitely the youngest winners - both for individual ages and combined age.

  2. Previous youngest winners were James Doyle and Elizabeth Fitzhardinge in 2002, both about 19 and half years.

  3. The oldest winners were Jane and Tony Leaversuch in 2013.

  4. Winners combined age peaked in 2013 and is now on a downward trend.

  5. Since 2011 the age difference between the winners has not been greater than 4.5 years, averages 2.0 years and on 6 occasions the winners have been about a years difference in age.

  6. Similarly, average combined age peaked at 67 years in 2013 and is now slowly decreasing.

  7. Average combined age from 2001 to 2021 is 62.0 years (no data for 2004 or 2005)

  8. Jules' and Lucy's combined age closely follows the average combined age until 2014, but is now heading in the opposite direction! Is their winning window now closed?
