Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue Results Season 2019/20

Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue - Heat 1 Firstly thank you to Ben Juengling and Ray Lampard for their assistance in the setting of the string line. Thank you also to Erin Gallagher and the Nippers for loan of the string line. Thanks also to Brodie Price and Chris Hazell for water safety / additional sighting objects! Thanks also to BenRayAnnieMim and the Patrol for retrieving the string line, washing everything and putting it away. Heat 1

Red/Yellow - Ben and Annie Juengling - 3rd Black - Kathleen and Brenton Laws - 1st Green/White - Paul Linabury and Lauren Brayford - 7th Red - Rosie Defrancesco and Aaron Cohen - 8th Blue/White - Ben Leonard and Sarah Michal - 6th but DQ'd Yellow - Julian Gibbings and Lucy Gunzburg - 2nd White/Black - Hayley Myers and Nick Hudson - 5th but DQ'd Orange - Logan Ovenden-Clarke and Sophia Papandroulakis - 7th and special prize for longest team name Green/Yellow - Tilly and Clancy Banfield - 4th Ben Leonard swam to the wrong buoy (White/Black), raised his arm, then swam across to the correct buoy (Blue/White) and again raised his arm. 8.8.3 (f) "should a competitor swim to a wrong buoy and signal the team shall be disqualified." Nick Hudson as board paddler left on the signal of Ben Leonard on the White/Black buoy - the incorrect buoy for Ben but the correct buoy for Nick's swimmer Hayley. The Surfs Sports Manual is silent on what happens to a team if a swimmer incorrectly signals on their buoy. It does however state 8.8.3 (g) "the team shall not be disqualified if the rescuer incorrectly crosses the start/changeover line and then resumes the correct position to correctly await the finish signal from the patient." So this allows for the board paddler to leave on the incorrect signal but then return to the start line and await the correct signal. So basically you need to watch your swimmer and leave when they signal on your buoy. So a harsher disqualification, but a disqualification none the less. Ben probably owes Nick and Hayley a drink. The start was also a little controversial as some swimmers may not have been ready. But as the starter noted, 7 of the swimmers were ready and how long do you have to wait for people to get their act together.

Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue - Heat 2 Heat 2 Red/Yellow -

Black - Jamie Brigg and Hannan Orchard - 7th Green/White - Matt Power and Sarah Power - 8th Red - Brenton Tenaglia and Kristie Orchard - 9th Blue/White - Sarah Hammond and Joe Keith - 2nd but DQ'd Yellow - Peter Brigg and Libby Rayner - 5th White/Black - Maia Simmonds and Mark Grzanka - 6th Orange - Christopher Bettridge and Mim Williams - 4th but DQ'd Green/Yellow - Gemma Banfield and Tim Tucak - 3rd Joe Keith's board got caught between the string line and the buoy line and as a result the board did not pass around the buoy. Thank you to Joe and Sarah for their honesty in confirming they did not paddle around the buoy but sadly disqualified. 8.8.3 (g) "paddle to and around the allotted buoy." and "The patient pick up shall be effected on the seaward side of the buoy." Mim Williams suffered a similar fate and Christopher Bettridge was picked up on the shoreward side of the buoy. Thank you to Mim and Chris for their honesty in confirming they did not paddle around the buoy but sadly also disqualified. Matt Power had a great swim but appeared headed for the Blue/White buoy. Luckily he self corrected and swam along the string line to signal from the Green/White buoy. Apart from Tim falling of his board twice this heat was without further incident on the water. Thanks to Susan "Team Whisperer" Defrancesco for convincing Gemma to swim and form the ninth team.

Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue - Final Teams: (First four from Heat 1)

Kathleen Laws and Brenton Laws Julian Gibbings and Lucy Gunzburg Ben Juengling and Annie Juengling Tilly Banfield and Clancy Banfield (Three of first five from Heat 2) Sydney Hodges and Luke Bishop Gemma Banfield and Tim Tucak Peter Brigg and Libby Rayner - substituted with Hannan Orchard (Wildcards) Consideration was given to Nick Hudson and Hayley Myers but a DQ is a DQ even if it was a harsh DQ. Matt Power and Sarah Power to see if Matt could swim straight Paul Linabury and Lauren Brayford, but Paul was already in the showers Mark Grzanka and Maia Simmonds, who were ranked higher than Matt & Sarah and Paul & Lauren, so thank you to Lauren for withdrawing. Final: Red/Yellow - Mark Grzanka and Maia Simmonds - 9th Black - Peter Brigg and Hannan Orchard - 7th Green/White - Matt Power and Sarah Power - 8th Red - Gemma Banfield and Tim Tucak - 6th Blue/White - Tilly Banfield and Clancy Banfield - 1st Yellow - Julian Gibbings and Lucy Gunzburg - 2nd White/Black - Sydney Hodges and Luke Bishop - 5th Orange - Ben Juengling and Annie Juengling - 3rd Green/Yellow - Kathleen Laws and Brenton Laws - 4th The sea breeze was in and it seems the northern end fared batter than the southern end. Matt Power still swam off course. Jules and Gunz thought they had a Swanbourne Cup at last only for Tilly and Clancy to catch a wave on their solid board paddle to the beach from 6th or 7th position at the end of the swim. Gemma was delighted to see them win so she and Tim caught a wave of their own. Everyone other than Tilly and Clancy rued not being lighter faster swimmers/paddlers! So congratulations to Tilly Banfield and Clancy Banfield who are the winners of the Swanbourne Cup Mixed Board Rescue Race for 2020! Hopefully Peter Brigg will have plenty of photos/video to upload later this afternoon. Also check out Mim Williams video which shows the finish including the wave the winners caught. And be back down at the Club at 3.30pm for the sports dietitian to find out how you can be a lighter faster swimmer/paddler! Clancy is 12 years 9 months old and Tilly is 14 years 9 months so definitely the youngest ever winners of the Swanbourne Cup and a record unlikely to be beaten! String Line was set an estimated 110 metres from shore, 10 metres less than the regulation 120 metres. Prior to the seabreeze coming in this meant it was a straight swim-off paddle-fest. Waves came good in the final to figure in the result! Special mention to Hayley Myers and Christopher Bettridge who swam to Rottnest the day before and backed it up to swim again today. No doubt 110 m felt long! Also Luke Bishop and Maia Simmonds who were support crew yesterday.
