Swanbourne celebrates 80 summers Eighty years of surf lifesaving patrols at Swanbourne beach were celebrated with a special dinner at the Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club. Club president Peter Brigg said 190 lifesavers had completed 2925 patrol hours over the summer, including two major rescues of people with suspected spinal injuries. “Thankfully, in both instances, the patients were cleared of any serious injury,” he said. The club also competed with success, including winning gold for the champion patrol at the state surf lifesaving championships and coming seventh nationally. Cath Fitzhardinge took out gold in the state masters longboard and shortboard surfboard riders’ competition, and won bronze in the open surfboard rider category. Bernadette Williams won bronze in the state 2km beach run and was seventh nationally, while Leesa Equid won bronze in the champion lifesaver category at state level. Swanbourne Nedlands’ education manager, Nick Hudson, said the club’s training program was gaining recognition as one of the best. “We have an enthusiastic and skilled training team who are dedicated to imparting their lifesav-ing skills to others,” he said. “The ever-increasing number of new members is testament to this” he said.
