Oldham Memorial Cup Results Season 2019/20

Congratulations to Brenton Tenaglia who is the winner* of the Oldham Memorial Cup for Season 2019/20. Oldham Memorial Cup Twenty six swimmers contested the Oldham Memorial Cup, including 0% of the Banfield family, but enhanced by the presence of the First Lady and her Mum. Leesa and Lauren swam to the start as a warm up. The start was south of the Blue Duck reef (no swimming over the reef) which saved setting a buoy. The go markers left at 9.03 am, but as Carly was sent off at minus 3 m 50 s, this meant the Oldham Memorial Cup started on time**. North Cottesloe SLSC didn't pause board or ski races but managed to avoid the swimmers passing across their course! Not quite the ideal swimming conditions of yesterday morning, given the early sea breeze and prevailing current. Ninette had a real chance to win this one but may have self handicapped herself out of it (again). Everyone came in together (the middle half of the field was within one minute of each other***) and there was much praise for the Handicapper. Fastest was Callum Griffiths. Review of the distance on various GPS smart devices via Strava^ shows the distance was spot on at about 1240 m.** Thanks to Jeremy for helping with the stopwatch, the Patrol for water safety including the IBR, Jane for recording the results. To ensure the validity of the result Trophy Winner Verification was introduced. The Trophy Winner will need to answer one of the following three questions, chosen at random at the conclusion of the event, to verify their win: (1) What was the name of the three quarter mile swim trophy prior to the Oldham Memorial Cup? (2) Ron Oldham for whom the Oldham Memorial Cup is named, undertook what profession? (3) Ron Oldham for whom the Oldham Memorial Cup is named, held what position in the Club? Brenton may have been a little rusty on his history but collectively enough swimmers had read the Oldham Memorial Cup statistics and history**** to suggest the correct answer to (1) was the Kirby Cup.

*Brenton may have been a little rusty on his history but the remaining swimmers helped him out. **Kudos to the Points Races Officer ^Except for Ray's which needs to be recalibrated ***Kudos to the Handicaps 201920 Modified.xlsm spreadsheet ****Kudos to the Historical Records Officer
