The original Clubrooms were located on the beach close to the Swanny Reef. These were replaced by new Clubrooms in August 1960 on the site occupied today by The Shorehouse. In October 1963 the Club added a Boat Shed, Patrol Rooms and Watch Tower, where the current Gym and Changerooms are today, with the Watch Tower demolished in 2001.
Completion of the current boat shed in December 1980, released the previous (1963) boat shed for use as a gymnasium and training area. However, funding issues meant 1980 boat shed was not finished to the desired level of fit out and the 1984-85 Annual Report noted the Club would like to see in 1985/86 the completion of the new boat shed and the organisation of the old shed into a ski room and weights area.
It wasn’t until September 1986 that the Club placed an order for $3800 (over 10% of that year's income/payments) worth of weight training equipment with Laurie Potters (a health club chain prominent in the 1980s, that was arguably the original gym franchise in Perth), to be fixed in the old boat shed which was to be turned into a gymnasium within two weeks. In November 1986 the Committee subsequently approved the expenditure of $1500 to enclose the gym (there were two north facing metal doors for moving the boats in and out ) and make it comfortable (carpet) and secure (security windows). The original gym equipment cost $3963!
The November 1986 Newsletter noted: “Gymnasium: The gymnasium is the best of the west coast surf clubs. Treat it with respect and don’t play with the equipment. Terry Foley will teach you the correct training methods. The money is coming from the "Cobs" (A group, comprising Geoff White, Graeme Murdock, Stan Garner, Jack Russell and Jim Gallagher, who called themselves the COBS (standing for Cantankerous Old Bastards) who managed the Nippers and conducted fundraising for the Club.
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (originally titled Dodgeball) is a 2004 American sports comedy film written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. Peter LaFleur (Vaughn) owns Average Joe's Gymnasium, a small, dilapidated gym with only a few members. When he defaults on the gym's mortgage, the cocky White Goodman (Stiller), who owns Globo Gym across the street threatens to foreclose on Average Joe's and demolish it to build a new auxiliary parking structure for his members unless Peter can raise $50,000 in 30 days.
Logan Ovenden-Clarke used the name Average Joe’s to describe the Swanny Gym when promoting SurfFit, with the earliest reference found being 16 August 2017 (With the spelling being well and truly average, along with the lack of capitalisation in SurfFit, redeemed by the correct use of the possessive apostrophe):
